I am not on cellular currently. I had iMessage working just fine on wifi. After the latest ios update, it no longer works. It just says waiting for activation. I tried signing in with Apple ID, but it still just says waiting for activation. is there a way to activate if you are just on wifi?

It sounds like you are attempting to activate iMessage on an iPhone that is not attached to an active cellular data plan. At this time, you will need an active cellular account with SMS messaging to activate iMessage and FaceTime on your iPhone.

Thanks for the response. Actually it turns out you can do it with wifi only by using an email address--I checked to start conversations using an email address and it works. I have both iMessage and Face Time working again, even though it still says it's "waiting for activation."
