Q: How do you shuffle custom music playlists on Apple TV 4th Gen?

I can't find an option to shuffle custom music playlists when using the Apple Music app on the new Apple TV. When using an Apple Music currated playlist the option appears on the right under the artwork, but you don't get these options for your own custom playlists. I've also tried the in-song menu (where you get the normal options "love song", "start a station" & "add to playlist" etc.) but still no luck locating shuffle.

Have I missed something or is shuffle just missing for personal playlists?

sdrel & simonbin, I do not see an option to share or e-mail my playlist on my Apple TV, iTunes, iPad or iPhone.  Where do I find this?

I tried looking under more (...), on iTunes under File / Library / Export Playlist, etc., but I'm not seeing it anywhere.

Do I have to be subscribed to  Music Music?  I'm only subscribed to iTunes Match.

Oh, one other thing.  I want to be able to shuffle files and see more than 250 songs in my playlist without using Home Sharing.

I see that if I have iTunes running on my iMac and have Home Sharing enabled, then go to "Computer" instead of "My Music" I can both shuffle and see all the songs in my playlist.  However I wish to use my Apple TV away from home and play my music (as well as use it for watching TV of course).

I also do not want to be limited to the songs that I can fit on my iPhone and / or iPad.  Looking to get access to all my iTunes Match music.

Thanks for that info, if correct, I can hope the 9.1 update might solve the issue for me. I have about 5000+ songs in my library. I like to just put the whole library in shuffle mode and listen to what ever comes up. But I do this in a playlist to remove things like Christmas Music, musicals, comedy tracks and other specific things I don't want to casually listen to.

Sounds like there might be hope.

On the shuffle fix (mailing the playlist), I know I can export a playlist in iTunes but have not found a way to email (or share) it.

YYou should be able to share a playlist by going into it on either iTunes or the music app on any iOS device. There should be the 'actions' icon - a box with an arrow pointing upwards (sorry if you know that already!); on a device, it normally appears next to edit at the top of the song list, in iTunes, I think it it is top right of the window. One of the options if you click on it should be Share or Mailto (I think it's slightly different in iTunes than iOS devices). Mail it to yourself; if you then go into that playlist on Apple TV (not sure how long you might have to wait, but in my experience it is almost instant) you should now find the usual options under the artwork on the right - including 'add to playlist', 'love', and 'More'. The first option under 'more' should be shuffle. I have also found that this solves the problem of the 250 limit. All my longer playlists now display in full. Hope this helps.

simonbin, thanks for the response.  I am familiar with the "actions" icon, but do not see it on any of my devices, at least were this is concerned.

In iTunes, under Music / My Music / Playlists, if I select a playlist this is what I see on the top:

Edit Playlist and the heart icon.  Under "My Music" I see even less.

On my iPhone, when under "Playlists" or "My Music", all I see is the "Account" icon (a head) on the left and the "Search" icon on the right.

Nothing obvious under "Preferences" or "View" that would seem to prevent me from seeing the "actions" icon, but that could be it.  Again, I am not subscribed to  Music Music, however I am only subscribed to iTunes Match.

    Thanks

Aah, this has thrown up another oddity...! I noticed that the picture you show is for one of the automatically generated playlists within iTunes/music, not one of your own creations, and I don't use these playlists, so had never tried to share one. I have gone into the auto playlists on my devices, and, sure enough, there is no option to share. Have you tried to share one of your own playlists? it seems that this sharing workaround only works on your own playlists, not the Apple embedded ones. Sorry!

Actually I can't seem to find that icon even in my own "Smart Playlists" or even regular "Playlists".  For example, here is a regular (i.e. not a built-in or smart playlist).

Mmm.... Not sure what is happening there then. If I bring up a similar playlist in iTunes, the actions icon is to the right of the ❤️ at top right of screen. I also see that if I go into the '...' Menu (top left), there is an option to share playlist. See if it's there for you. If not, I can only think that you have to have an Apple Music subscription for this to work.
