Apple TV 4th Generation Stuttering

My brand new Apple TV seems to be suffering a lot to stream both audio and audio & video.

I already tried replacing the router from N300 to AC 1750, updating all softwares, restarting all devices, calling Apple without luck.

Any ideas on what could be happening here? I bought the Apple TV with the ONLY goal of streaming videos to the computer and then to the TV.

More testing. Have steaming issues on some movies still. Movie suddenly stops streaming with gear wheel spinning endlessly. Movie doesn't restart unless i back up a bit and restart movie from where it hiccuped.

All movies were downloaded from itunes store so are supposed to be right format. Stored on fast home NAS. Never had problems with either Apple TV 2 nor 3.

Not sure what's going on. Only thing that changed in my whole setup is the Apple TV itself.

Had some issues like this too.

The screensaver seems to run flawlessly but video playback is a bit wonky at times. The resolution seems a bit off too.

I know it isn't the equipment because the screensavers are beautiful. There is something else going on when playing back even local content.

The Hulu apps' resolution is terrible. I know Apple didn't write it but something just seems off about all the video playback. It could be there is something that isn't right about the network solution and it is telling the apps to slow down and run at a lower resolution.

Hopefully they will get some of these things fixed soon.

My new Apple TV (4th gen) had been performing fine, until this evening when a movie I just purchased from iTunes started stuttering/pausing at random spots while streaming from my local iMac's iTunes library. Stopping/pausing/replaying portions of the movie showed that the problem wasn't a particular point in the movie, since the stuttering occurred at different points in the movie. Replaying previously stuttering points play fine, only to have the stuttering occur a bit later in a different location in the film. I'm running the latest retail build of MacOS X 10.11.1 on my iMac, and the latest build of iTunes, as well.

My Apple TV (4th gen) is connected via Ethernet (gigabit) to my local area network (LAN), and my network router is an Apple AirPort Extreme (802.11 ac). Everything else on the network is performing normally. I checked my ISP connection with Comcast, and it is also performing normally (30mbps).

Two movies I recently downloaded are affected, Ant-Man and Inside Out. Last night I downloaded Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation, and it ran smoothly, without incident. Tonight, after the stuttering problem with the two movies I mentioned, I watched another movie I recently downloaded, Star Trek 4, and it played fine. So, I'm a bit perplexed.

I tried switching the Apple TV (4th gen) to WiFi (ac) and the stuttering persisted, so it wasn't the network connection. I then copied the movie to another newer model iMac I have running the latest build of MacOS X 10.11.2 (beta) and AirPlayed the movie to the Apple TV (4th gen), but even the copy stuttered on the new Apple TV over the AirPlay connection. I then played the source movie from my primary iMac over WiFi to another Apple TV (3rd gen), and it played normally.

From these steps I'm left with the impression that something in the encoding of the two problematic movies doesn't like either the version of tvOS or the new hardware running on the new Apple TV, since at least one of the problematic movies this evening played fine on my old Apple TV.

I did some more testing this morning, this time playing the movie over WiFi from my iMac to my iPad running iOS 9.1. It stuttered almost constantly, sometimes even pausing the movie, which forced me to repeatedly click on the play button to resume.

I next tried playing the movie over my Ethernet LAN to my other iMac, and interestingly it played fine. So, it now appears the only commonality for the stuttering is the iPad and the Apple TV are both running versions of iOS 9. The old Apple TV 3 last night also played fine, and it was running its own OS, but not a variant of iOS 9.

I just spent a couple of hours talking to AppleCare about this. The iTunes Store movies I downloaded that are stuttering/pausing on the new Apple TV (4th gen) play normally directly in iTunes on my iMac, and they also play fine to my old Apple TV (3rd gen) over WiFi. I even downloaded one of the movies from the iTunes Store directly to my iPad, and it again played normally. So, whatever the issue is, tvOS or hardware, the issue appears to be localized to the Apple TV (4th gen) box itself, and is not the downloaded movie. I also confirmed with them that both my wired Ethernet and Wifi (802.11 ac) connections to the new Apple TV were not the issue (I checked speedtest.net over both connections). It's also not Home Sharing, since that works fine to the old Apple TV.

They're shipping me a replacement unit to see if it resolves the mysterious buffering issue. If not, they've asked me to call them back to escalate the issue to their engineers.

Please advise if the replacement appletv 4 fixes it. I have the same issue when streaming movies from iTunes on pc over wifi (from computers app on the appletv), which has worked fine historically on prior appletv 3. What I found was when I play the same movie from the store on the appletv (over Internet) it also works just fine, no stuttering. So it is some sort of streaming issue from pc over wifi.

I will. We watched Ant-Man streaming directly from the Apple servers tonight and it played flawlessly. While this is a great viewing experience, it's a huge bandwidth consumer. That's why we prefer to download the movie once and stream it from our local RAID array plugged into our iMac server.

I too hope the replacement Apple TV (4th gen) resolves this issue.

I beleive I have discovered the issue. The Apple TV 4th Gen when streaming from local library doesn't appear to buffer at all. Translation: if there's any lag, wireless signal, hard drive, other stuff going on the computer, etc it will cause a hiccup. When streaming from purchased movies from the Internet i have no issues whatsoever because it buffers the content for a steady viewing experience. If this truly is the case, then Apple really blew it. I wonder if they only allocated limited storage for streaming files from local libraries? Hopefully they will address in an update.

I've opened a case with Apple to provide my observations. However I'm not very hopeful as the tech I talked to didn't seem to understand that streaming local files shouldn't make a difference with my internet modem and has nothing to do with my internet connection. Why wireless access point is a separate from my modem.

I have this same problem with buffering issues playing content from iTunes. I took my atv 4 into the store and they gave me a new one today. the problem still exists. I have the latest apple router and checked airport utility and the atv has strong signal -55 to -60 dbm at 144 mbs. I put my old atv gen 2 and everything works fine as it has for years. Sure its not a network issue, something with the design of the new atv. When it freezes, the bar comes up and has no buffering and then it jumps a few inches and the video starts back. Checked the atvos and its at 9.0.1. Thinking about returning unit.
