Superscripts Become Full Size When Hyperlinked?

I am creating an ePub which features multiple superscript numbers the author wants to link to "notes" in each chapter. These superscripts need to be hyperlinked to bookmarks in a notes section at the end of the book. When I make a superscript number into an active hyperlink, it becomes a full size text character and loses formatting. Anyone have a way to stop this from happening?
