Q: cd drive doesnt work after updating to yosemite

Hi peeps,

I updated my macbook to Yosemite there about a month ago, before that I was running 10.5.8. Really, who ever uses CD drives anymore... but today my friend loaned me a DVD. I tried to put it into the CD drive but I couldn't get it in, as if something is already in there. But there couldn't be, I never leave discs inside. One thing I did notice is that before the update, when I would boot up, the CD drive would make these strange machine noises, as if the start up sequence was programmed to check the functioning of the CD drive first thing. After the update this sound would no longer happen. I thought they had reprogrammed it to not check the CD drive or somehow do it quiter, but no trying to load a CD I'm finding maybe it wasn't working properly at all. Anyone any ideas?

Here's my details;

- MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)

- 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

- 6 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

- Yosemite 10.10.5

    The drive may have chosen that moment to fail... replacements of correct spec may be

    purchased and perhaps even installed by an end-user, such as those from OWC or

    macsales.com, who is a specialist Apple-centric reseller...

    You could try & see if a system management controller reset may help:

    • Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

    Otherwise, guides such as those free videos on how to install optical drive, etc are

    available from OWC macsales, or take a look into iFixit.com mac repair guides, for

    ideas on the complexity of your computer and if you want to risk the DIY repair.

    Good luck & happy computing!
