Does the new AppleTV (4 Generation) support Digital Audio connection from my soundbar?

I am having trouble using the volume button on on my new apple tv. I am wondering if it's because i am not connecting the soundbar to my TV using an HDMI cord. Instead i am using a Digital Audio cord. I have gone to "Learn New Device" and did all of the volume up and down to train the remote but it's still not working. I even tried to change the Audio Output on my TV to my Samsung Sounbard but it still isn't recognizing it. Please help! Do i have to use an HDMI cord for this to all work?

I'll try to give as much details to my issue as possible. My apple TV remote works. It's just the volume when i "Learn New Device" doesn't actually enable me to control the volume with my apple TV. I have:

Apple TV connected to my TV through HDMI.

Soundbar connected to my TV through Digital Output cord.

So i don't know if it's because I'm not using HMDI from my soundbar to my TV or what. My TV is on mute and all my sound comes from my home theater system/soundbar and subwoofer. What should my "Audio Output" be? Right now my only option is Apple TV, as it doesn't recognize my soundbar.

So i just realized my TV HDMI-CEC wasn't on. Turned this on, Turned my surround sound on my Vizio TV, Digital Audio out is bitstream, and analog out is fixed. I don't see anything on my TV about Audio return channel, which sounds important because i want it coming from Digital Output. Still not able to change volume from my appleTV remote. Also, Why is your audio output through airplay?
