Buying refurbished. Yay or nay?

Has anyone had good luck (or bad) purchasing a refurbished MacAir? I talked to the sales guy at the Apple store and he convinced me it's as good as new since they go over it with a fine toothed comb. The savings is about $170-$190. Not sure if it's worth it, but then it might offest Apple Care cost

.

With one exception every refurb I’ve bought from Apple looked brand new - no scratches dents, or obvious use at all. Each was just as reliable as the new computer’s I’ve bought from Apple. The one exception was an early Mac mini, the ones that had the bottom that required a putty knife to open. That one had a couple obvious scratches were the mini had been opened. The funny thing was, I noticed it immediately because after starting it to ensure that it functioned, I turned it off to do a memory upgrade. I discovered that the original owner had beat me. My refurbed mini came with twice as much memory as advertised!

Thanks-it looks like refurb is not a bad recommendation. But, dwb, it looks like you did not buy direct from Apple on the refurb? Looks like it was a direct buy from a seller.

The exception wasn’t not buying from Apple the exception was 1 computer from Apple not looking brand new. I suspect the mini I bought was a computer that was returned during the 14 day grace period Apple allows and that the original owner either forgot about or didn’t bother to remove the memory upgrade that had been installed. I’ve been in the computer biz for a long time and have a good idea of what the refurb process is like. One way or another during the refurb process the tech just overlooked the RAM upgrade (or since the computer passed diagnostics didn’t bother to crack open the computer to remove it).
