Pioneer vsx-1122 volume not being controlled by Apple remote

I Don't have the remote For the receiver but the Apple TV recognized it and will not control the volume. It controls the tv just fine but for some reasons will NOT help me do the audio, or even turn it on or off... Without the remote I cannot tell it to learn from IR BUT again, the Apple TV already says in the audio menu, output through vsx-1122 so it sees it, but if I do that it wants to AirPlay and I don't want that... Any thoughts without the pioneer remote?
