Need help setting up 2nd Gen ipod Touch

Hello,

I got a hand-me-down 2nd gen 8GB ipod touch (ios 4.2.1). It was originally set up for Chinese, but I need to change it to English. I googled and went to Settings->General->Languages, and changed that to English. But iTunes Store and App Store still seems to be in Chinese. Further googling told me that I should sign out of iTunes and re-sign in with my Apple ID. I went to Settings->Store and entered my Apple ID and password, I got a (error?) screen in Chinese (only part in English said "IOS"), then "Cannot connect to iTunes Store". I'm sure I entered my Apple ID and password correctly. And as for the App Store, since everything is still in Chinese, I can't get anywhere to change the language to English.

Can someone tell me what I need to do to change everything to English? At least for iTunes Store and App Store, and I don't know what else needs to be changed. And what am I doing wrong about signing in with my Apple ID? Could the problem be related to the version of the IOS being so far behind? I understand that the OS cannot be updated beyond 4.2.1. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Illaass,

My Apple ID is a USA ID, but the ipod still complains with the "Can't connect to iTunes Store" error.

Regarding connecting the iPod to my computer and restoring via iTunes: This iPod was originally purchased in Hong Kong. If I use iTunes to restore to factory settings, would that cause the iPod to revert to the Chinese settings? And is there any problem with the fact that the iPod is stuck at IOS 4.2.1, whereas the current version is 9.1? Would iTunes be able to restore an older version of IOS to the iPod?

Did you look at the

Can't connect to the iTunes Store

As discussed in that article if the date/time/time zone is not correct yo can't connect to the iTunes store.

If the iPod has a screen lock passcode you will not be able to restore the iPod unless you place the iPod in Recovery Mode

The 2G iPod can't go higher than 4.2.1. When yo restore it will still be at 4.2.1

.

To more easily find compatible apps:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
