Yahoo website is causing MBP to crash

I have a mid 2012 13-inch MacBook Pro currently running OS X El Capitan 10.11.1. Regardless of which browser I'm am using (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), the Yahoo website causes my MBP to heat up quickly and the fan will start to spin endlessly. If I catch it early enough I can close out of the website and the other apps still function but the laptop remains hot and the fan continues to run. If I try to shut the MBP down normally, the laptop will not do it and will look like this: User uploaded file

I have let the laptop sit like that for 3 hours before just to see if it could correct itself but it didn't. In the end I have to force-shutdown by holding down the power button. For some reason it is only Yahoo's website that does this. My friends who also have MBP's do not encounter this problem. I've run malware and virus checks and come up empty every time. I have done disk repair and it says the disk is okay. I cannot find any solution to this problem other than avoid visiting Yahoo.

Note: I have I have had this problem since upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan.

If anyone has a clue what is going on please let me know.

Restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" (read below). Then, restart your Mac normally. Reply with your observations.

  • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
  • You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
  • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
  • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
  • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

I realize this is getting old and it seems no progress is being made, but everything you are doing will eventually isolate the cause. It may or may not be anything you can fix though.

Next, try the following:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Load OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
  3. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
  4. Choose Get Help Online.
  5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.
  6. Load a few web pages and observe how well Safari performs in Recovery mode, compared to how it has been.

Restart your Mac normally and describe your results.

It seems the following is occurring: you can navigate any number of websites including Wikipedia and Reuters and everything works OK. Yahoo works OK for a little while, but after navigating a few pages you can no longer do anything with Safari. It does not lock up, but quitting Safari leaves your Mac in a state in which you cannot do anything with it but force it to shut down. Is that correct?

In the first video, Yahoo appears to open with an animated advertisement. At 1:12 in that video, you click on something that is too blurry to identify. It looks vaguely like Google AdChoices. Can you confirm or explain what that is?

After you click on that thing Yahoo no longer seems to function normally. Safari does not exactly freeze, but you can no longer navigate to any other web pages.

To continue troubleshooting, I suggest opening Activity Monitor – it's in your Mac's Utilities folder. Select the CPU tab and sort the % CPU column in descending order (the arrow or chevron should be pointing "down"). In the Window menu, select My Processes. Make the window long enough so that you can see at least a dozen processes.

What you should see will resemble this

User uploaded file

Leave Activity Monitor running while you launch Safari and duplicate the problem. When you can no longer navigate Safari, quit Safari, and determine if you can post a screenshot of Activity Monitor (read below). If your Mac's screenshot function does not work when it becomes unresponsive, take a photograph of Activity Monitor and post it in a reply.

Screenshots (Mac):

To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot named "Screen Shot...." followed by a date and time on your Desktop.

When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:

User uploaded file

This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button. If you are not using full screen mode you can simply drag the image into the text entry field.

⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.

⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.

Don't capture or upload any information you consider personal. To edit an existing screenshot, read How to edit a screenshot.

Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

You are correct. That was a Google AdChoices banner. It was only there because I had deleted all of the extensions (I use AdBlock Plus) and that was the first time that the ad banner had appeared so I know it is not the source of the problem. The Mac began acting up as soon as I clicked. the Yahoo "Home" link.

This time, I was able to navigate Yahoo for maybe 30 seconds before it started acting up. It happened when I clicked the "Sports" link.

Here are the screenshot(s) you requested:

The following screenshot comes after closing out of Safari and opening it back up again.

As you can see, the WiFi is connected but Safari is claiming it cannot connect to the server. I was simultaneously watching a music video on my iPad to verify that the WiFi was working properly during that time.

It appears something called K9 Web Protection is installed, or was installed at one time:

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Same goes for "CleanMyMac". Any system that has been affected by it will not work properly.

Try uninstalling "K9 Web Protection" first, but if that is not successful the only certain remedy for CleanMyMac's effects on a Mac is a complete system erase and reinstall.

Review the following: If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

That problem is usually caused by ill-conceived "anti-virus" or "Internet security" programs. If you installed anything of that description, uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. Otherwise, determine if you can correlate the problems with any relevant system.log entries. Read below.

Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to to that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.

Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.

If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.

Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.

To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.

Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.

One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.

Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.

Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

coreduetd suggests a problem with Handoff but it should not cause the behavior you describe. Besides, if it is related to Handoff I know of no reliable ways to fix it, and cannot recommend any potential solutions unless I can duplicate the problem myself.

Safari menu > Preferences... > Privacy. Click Remove All Website Data and confirm. After that you will need to log in to all websites that require authentication (such as this one).

If that does not immediately solve the problem I continue to suspect a conflict with an Internet plug-in or Extension as described in the above Apple Support document. Carefully follow the instructions under Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons. Post the contents of those four specified User Library folders before deleting anything suspicious.

Nov 3, 2015 11:24 AM in response to pagekevi

OK, revert the change by setting IPv6 back to "Automatic".

Something isn't adding up, which usually means I'm missing something obvious. I observed a very similar, if not identical problem a few days ago but the wireless network I was using was performing a bit slow. After loading some web pages (none of them Yahoo though) "Safari can't connect to server" appeared and no more webpages would load until I restarted the Mac. That is what led me to suspect network problems. I was unable to correlate it with anything specific, and the problem went away on its own after connecting to a different network with better throughput. It shouldn't occur at all though, even on a slow network.

Confirm you are not using any third party "memory cleaning" applications or any similarly categorized utility. It would certainly cause what you're describing.

Another suggestion: Enable Safari's Develop menu by opening Safari's Preferences... Advanced, and select the box "Show Develop menu in menu bar". The Develop menu will appear. When the problem occurs, select "Empty Caches". Determine if that has any effect.

To isolate the potential problems to your User Account, please create a new, temporary User Account according to the following: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support. Reply with your observations using the temporary User account. If the problem does not occur while using it, some more suggestions will be applicable.

When you are finished troubleshooting, you can delete that account.

Thanks. In the same manner as finding the Internet Plug-Ins folder contents as described in Apple's Support document above, please post the contents of each of the following folders. In other words choose the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder.

In that field, type

/Library/LaunchAgents

and click Go. Post the contents of that window. Be sure to capture all its contents. If you are using "list view" please expand the Name column so that the entire file name is readable.

Repeat the above with the following

/Library/LaunchDaemons

and (though it should already have been ruled out as a factor)

~/Library/LaunchAgents

Post the contents of those three windows.

Thank you for your timely response John. While in "Safe Mode" I did not have any problems with the Yahoo website. I restarted the Mac in normal mode and the problem continued. I did this 3 or 4 times to ensure the first time wasn't a fluke. Yahoo does not cause the Mac to freeze and restart while in "Safe Mode". However, it continues to freeze the Mac in normal mode.

I'd remove all of them, with the exception of those described in the Support document: "Don't remove Default Browser.plugin, nslQTScriptablePlugin.xpt, Quartz Composer.webplugin, or QuickTime Plugin.plugin."

Adobe Flash Player is a common cause of poor browser performance, and remains a potential vector for malware intrusion. It shouldn't even exist any more. You can hasten its well-deseved and inevitable demise by not using it. Most websites no longer require Flash Player. Considering that its most common implementation is to deliver resource-intensive advertising content, you are probably better off without it.

Adobe Shockwave is an even greater potential threat. Read the following to determine how to uninstall both of them, respectively:

https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html

https://helpx.adobe.com/shockwave/kb/download-shockwave-stand-alone-installer.ht ml

I do not allow any Google products to infest my Macs either. I doubt that it is the direct cause of the Yahoo website to crash though. Use Google products if you must, but be aware that they are a common cause of poor Mac performance.

I can think of no reason to use any Adobe PDF plugins. Safari already includes everything it needs to render PDF images natively, without the uncertainty of Adobe's ability to do that correctly. Adobe's Mac support in general has been atrocious for well over a decade now. Again, I doubt that particular plugin is the direct cause of what you describe.
