Does optical audio OUT work on AppleTV3?

I am trying to connect my AppleTV3 (model A1469) to my home theatre system - audio-only as I'm using the HDMI feed straight into my flat screen TV for video.

My home theatre receiver is a Kenwood KRF-V5050D. It has an optical digital audio IN port.

I purchased a brand new optical (TOSLINK) cable and connected my AppleTV3 to my Kenwood receiver.

However, no sound comes through to my receiver.

I have read on various forums that many others have the same / similar problem. But I can find no definitive solution.

Is there in fact a defect / problem with the AppleTV3?

Many thanks.

Hey SteveCPT,

If I understand correctly, you hear no sound when you connect an optical cable to a receiver. I would recommend you read this article, it may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.

Get help with audio, video, or power on Apple TV - Apple Palaikymas

if you don't hear any sound on your Apple TV

Adjust your audio settings and check the audio after each step:

  1. On your Apple TV, select Settings > Audio & Video.
  2. Make sure Audio Out is set to Apple TV.
  3. Change the Audio Mode from Auto to 16 bit.
  4. On Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), change the Dolby Digital Out setting from On to Off.

If there's no sound when you navigate the menu, choose Settings > Audio & Video and make sure that Sound Effects and Music is on.
