Macbook 5,1 (2010) with optical drive cannot install Windows 10 in Boot Camp

Dear all,

I'm having a lot of issues with trying to install Windows 10 Enterprise onto my Macbook Unibody 5,1 (mid-2010) that has an in-built optical drive.

After reading numerous articles and experiencing the problems first-hand, I first noticed that it is not possible to create a bootable Windows 10 Installer USB drive via Boot Camp on this machine due to the fact it has an in-built optical drive. My Macbook Unibody 5,1 (mid-2010) is currently running Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11 with Boot Camp 6.0.0. For anyone who doesn't already know, a bootable USB WIndows 10 Installer drive CANNOT be created via Boot Camp if the Macbook is of a similar type to mine with a built-in optical drive.

Instead, I created such a USB drive on my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Early 2013), which is currently running Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and Boot Camp 5.1.4 (500). I was able to create the USB drive successfully including installing the Boot Camp Windows support drivers onto the USB drive too.

I attempted to then plug this USB drive into my Macbook 5,1 and ran Boot Camp again. I selected to "Install Windows 7 or later". However, I received the following message:

User uploaded file

"The installer disc could not be found".

It appears that even if the USB drive is successfully configured to install Windows via Boot Camp, it is completely prevented to do so on a machine with an in-built optical drive. To confirm this, I entered my Windows 7 Ultimate DVD into the drive and I was able to progress with the installation (i.e partitioning the disk to prepare for the Windows Installation).

I tried to fool Boot Camp into thinking I wanted to proceed with a Windows 7 Install. I restarted my Macbook 5,1 with the Windows 10 Installation USB drive in and held down the OPTION/ALT key to select the USB drive. I started with the Windows 10 Installation but when I got to the part where I was supposed to choose the partition to install Windows to, none of the partitions were eligible for me to continue the installation procedure.

The Windows installation complained that there wasn't a valid partition to install to, even though I could see the partition I had created through Boot Camp in order to install Windows onto. It said that the partition needed to be of type GPT and not MBR.

From here, I'm stuck. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to install Windows 10 on the separate partition, either through Boot Camp or any other means.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11), Macbook Unibody 5,1 (mid-2010)

1. From Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support, your 2010 Mac is officially not supported.

2. Using a USB installer from a different generation Mac can cause additional issue, because the drivers may not match the hardware on the destination Mac where the USB will be used to install Windows.

3. You can get to W10 (if you must), if you install W7/W8+, as supported on your Mac, and run an in-place upgrade to W10, without involving BC Assistant. This does cause some driver issues, primarily because the Apple-BC drivers are not certified for W10.
