Time Machine not backing up since OS X Yosemite upgrade

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite a month ago and since then I am unable to back up using Time Machine. I plug in an external WD Hard Drive as usual, go into Time Machine but now it just says 'preparing data' but never backs up.

Can anyone suggest a solution please?

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

First I'd boot from the Restore partition using CMD+r on bootup, use Disk Utility to 1st Repair both drives, then Repair Permissions on both, if that doesn't help...
