aperture 3 migration to Lightroom 5 or 6?

Hello,

I have about 500gb of photos in Aperture 3. I have LR5 on iMac and planning to migrate but was waiting for 'problems' to settle down with early use of Adobe plug-in about 6 months ago. My question is should I update first from LR5 to LR6 and then run the import plug-in or do it in LR5? I am trying to keep my folder structure in Aperture 3 so it gets imported in the same way if possible. I am aware I will likely lose some or all of the edits in RAW. Thanks for any suggestions. I am still on Yosemite and assuming this is safer than also going to El Captain at this point. Thank for any input. I have read too many horror stories with large libraries and yes I will have multiple back-ups just in case.

OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), Aperture 3.6, Adobe LR 5.7

I would suggest that you upgrade Lightroom first. You may want to look at the Cc version as it has more features than the standalone version.

I would also recommend that you look at purchasing Aperture Exporter, a third party conversion program that allows you to keep your Aperture file structure and all of your edits.

I converted everything over from Aperture a couple of months ago, and was very happy with the process.

Hi,

I have been looking for reviews on the Aperture Exporter and the few I read weren't that positive. This made me nervous and hence my questions-- go this way or the Adobe method?

Do you know if the conversion from Aperture 3 to LR 5.7 or 6 makes any difference? I am not going the CC route-- have one LR6 on new MacBook Pro and need to upgrade my iMac from LR5 to 6.

Trying to figure out the 'safest' and least cumbersome way to move 500gb-- hence my questions.

Thanks

I had a similar sized library. I followed the instructions on the AE website and successfully imported the library to LR 6 CC. The file structure in LR looks exactly the same as it did in Aperture which is the way I wanted it. It saved the original raw photos as well as a JPEG version with the edits baked in. I did use AE to export 1 year of photos at a time and then import that year into LR to make sure it was successful before moving on to the next year. It took a bit longer but I wanted to know where the problems were, if they occurred, but there weren't any. AE gives you a free trial to see if it works. Try it and see if you like it before buying.
