Apple TV 4 Turns TV ON with CEC but won't turn TV off

I've got a 70" Vizio P series TV and a Denon Amp connected via HDMI to the new Apple TV gen 4.

The aTV will turn on the TV and Amp when I wake it up and it turns the amp off when it goes to sleep, but it leaves the TV turned ON. Other CEC functions work like volume control and input selection, just the power off for the TV doesn't.

Anybody got any suggestions??

Thanks!

The Vizio only gives the option to turn CEC open or off or using it only for ARC (audio return to the amp). I've got it enabled. The aTV4 turns the TV but not off. There are so other settings I can find to fiddle with so at this point I'm thinking it's a protocol implementation error somewhere. The TV and Amp are running the latest firmware and the aTV4 tells me there are no updates as of yet. Still stuck. 😟

I don’t think it’s a software problem. I have a Samsung TV (Samsung calls CEC “Anynet+”) and it has separate controls for turning CEC on/off and turning Auto Off on/off. Auto Off controls whether the TV responds to a CEC “power off” command. My Samsung also has a CEC device discovery function that lets it find other CEC enabled devices connected to it. It finds my Samsung BD player and the new Apple TV4. I can then connect the TV to one of those devices and the TV remote will control that device. Works as advertised. If there’s problem I think it’s with your Vizio.

Very true statement. Makes the interoperability of devices a lot less of a certain thing. It also means that companies like Apple who make products that play in this space have to test against a broader range of third party devices. Visio is a pretty common TV brand so I'd have thought Cupertino would have included it in their tests. Having said that I can't reply to texts on my iPhone from my Lexus either and that is a pretty common brand of car. <boggle>

Like many you seem to think it’s entirely Apple’s responsibility to be compatible with every gadget out there. What about Vizio? What about Lexus? Are they under no obligation to work with Apple in order to make their products compatible? What if in order to make something work Apple had to abandon their own technology and specifications? Are they obligated to do that?

Needless to say I do not agree with your premise.

Wanted to say, I have the reverse problem too. AppleTV4 turns OFF my tv, but won't turn it ON. Both ON and OFF functions used to work the first day I had the new AppleTV, but at some point the ON function stopped working.

Things I have tried that did not work:

Upgraded my TV firmware

Factory reset TV

Pulled out TV power plug for 30 seconds

Played with all the "EZ Sync" CEC functions on my TV

Pulled the power on the AppleTV to force a hard restart

I'm going to factory reset my AppleTV tonight and see if that works.

desperatley need help. I have a 2 year old Samsung LED smart Tv. I have the Bose Cinemate 120 as my sound system. There is 1 hdmi directly plugged from the tv to the Bose receiver. My cable box, Apple TV 3 and PS4 run through the receiver. I've had the Apple TV 3 since I got the system and it's worked like a charm. Since getting the Apple TV 4, every time I'm watching tv and use my Bose remote it no longer turns the tv off. It use to always turn the tv off when I powered down no matter what source. I understand the new Apple TV 4 has the universal capabilities but I turned all of these off in hopes of getting back to using 1 remote. I even rebooted my Bose system and unplugged my tv. It works the first time but the second I switch over the Apple TV, the remote stops powering the TV on and off. Even after unplugging the tv and plugging it back in, when I search for the Anynet+ device it only shows the Apple TV though the remote will power the tv until sources are switched. Some one please help me it's driving me crazy! I don't want to use the Bose remote, Apple TV remote and the Samsung tv remote.

Excellent. Thanks for the info. I never noticed if my Samsung TV was or was not turning on when I turned on my aTV4 because my TV was generally already on when I swapped the HDMI TV source to the aTV4. However, I was noticing my TV turning off when I put the aTV4 to sleep and it was confusing the heck out of me. I totally forgot about Anynet+ CEC. On my Samsung, Auto Off was set to "YES" by default and greyed out since CEC was "OFF". I had to turn "ON" CEC in order to set Auto Off to "NO". I then turned CEC back to 'OFF". I just don't want my TV turning off when I put my aTV4 to sleep since I will generally swap back to Satellite. Your post helped.

Similar issue; ATV4 will turn my TV OFF, but not back ON. The TV is older (Sharp lc-32av22u) and doesn't appear to have any CEC control settings (nothing for Sharp's Aquos Link, which is their CEC brand). I assumed my TV wouldn't support CEC, but since it can turn the device off, it should be able to turn it back on, right?

Any advice on how to tackle/troubleshoot would be appreciate.

I have the same but in reverse. TV won't turn on, but will turn off. It worked for the first 11 days but magically stopped working. A reboot of the ATV made it work again a single time, but haven't found the root cause. 9.0.1 doesn't fix this...
