Akamaihd.net cookies

I'm working in OS X Yosemite, 10.10.

Everything's working fine. Last week I had to download UnrarX and stupidly answered a short survey. Immediately I saw pop-ads. I ended up identifying the ads originated by "PremiereOpinion". Quickly I went through a complete and slow-cleaning stage and on top ran Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes, a free download, suggested by the genius bar) to make sure I got rid of it. Well, I did.

Now things continue working fine, but I got into the habit of constantly cleaning my cookies when I'm in the internet, and sometimes I read WHO is storing cookies. I saw several times Akamaihd.net cookies. Reading about it, Akamaihd.net is malware.

I ran my Anti-Malware program and nothing was found. I have not problem surfing the internet... but the **** Akamaihd.net cookies keep appearing every once in a while, on Safari.

Does this mean, Akamaihd.net is stored somewhere in my computer or just hanging around in my Safari browser?

Hello manny772,
I understand your concerns with malware because of what you have recently done to remove it. Let's take a look what that could be from.
Now I personally don't know your web browsing habits, but if you use Facebook or Twitter in Safari, you will run into that cookie. According to the link below, it is a content delivery service to help speed up the process of getting you information to those services, plus some other that deal with gaming.
Akamai Technologies

Content-delivery networks and domains[edit]

  • akamai.net
  • akamaiedge.net
  • akamaized.net
  • akamaihd.net, a content-delivery network used by companies like Ubisoft, Twitter and Facebook to speed up their services
  • edgesuite.net
  • edgekey.net
  • srip.net[34][35]
  • akamaitechnologies.com, a content-delivery network used by companies like Adobe
  • akamaitechnologies.fr

If you want to make sure that is the case, I would recommend deleting that cookie and not use those services for a short period of time to see if it comes back.
Let me know what you find out.
Take it easy

Thank you, judisings.

I only use FaceBook a lot in a Safari browser–– so that's one reason why I see these cookies.

Searching for answers I also came upon an explanation of "akamai.net.cookies" and as you posted, it is just a content delivery service that helps speeding up things, in the case of FB, it helps with pictures for a quick display. Of course there's more, but basically I was glad to find out it was "ok" to have it appearing constantly as cookies. The only problem would be if akamai.net appears installed in a computer, or as an "extension" in the browser–– something that is not happening with my situation.

Some window users say it is malware, others say it is "considered" malware and "it could" show up by displaying ads, but what worried me the most was that in one blog people advised that it was a serious malware for a Mac.

Separating both the good and the bad ways of seeing it, I determined there are more people agreeing in the good ways, concluding it is just a cookie that can easily be wiped of from the Safari browser. I also use Google Chrome and Firefox, and I've never seen it appearing there.

I appreciate the time you put in trying to help me.

Thanks again--
