Q: I recently installed El Capitan. Now cooling fan is constantly on.

I checked activity log. Nothing is using CPU(more than the activity log anyway).  I reset SMC several times, booted into safe mode etc.

The fan is immediate with the power button and continues even when starting into boot camp.

I rolled back to a pre El Capitan (Yosemite) install via time machine and the fan does the same thing.  I can only guess that El Capitan changed my SMC or something in EFI or early level start sequence.

    Run the diagnostics application:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

    That may offer a clue.

    Ciao.

Thanks, I did. It didn't show anything wrong.  By the way, the fan was still on the whole time while running the tests.  Also, when I boot into the disk utility the fan is still on.

The fan should always be on.  It is a question of how fast.  Download a temperature/fanspeed application and post the output.

    Ciao.

That's interesting.  I could never hear it before.  So maybe the fan is going bad so I can hear it?  Are you sure it should always be on?  I did a tech support chat with Apple and they didn't indicate that. They suggested re-installing the OS and said it was probably a software issue since it started when I upgraded to El Capitan.  I am positive it is not a temperature issue because it is instant on with the power button after the machine is off and cool.  The fan is also on when Mac OS is not running.  Thanks again for your reply.

These are the fan readings from my MBP as I respond to you:

    Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 6.30.36 AM.png

I have minimal applications open and they are at the 'default' speed.  I cannot hear them.  When they get to 4k-5k+ rpm's, then they do become audible.  But then I an using applications that require more resources.

It is possible that you have a faulty fan or that a sensor has failed.  A fan speed reading might provide a clue.

    Ciao.

    Okay, my CPU is at 4%. L Fan 2159 and R 2003. Temps are similar to yours 37.7 42.7 36.6 33.8 and 33.8.

My fan isn't loud, I can just hear it now when I could not before.  One of the things I love about this computer is the SSD and how silent it was.

There seems to be a greater difference between the two fan speeds than what I have generally observed.  The left fan speed is my concern.  Since you have performed the SMC reset and the MBP is not overheating, I suggest that you make a genius bar appointment and have the technicians check the MBP.  The evaluation will be FREE.

See if they share my concern or declare your MBP to be normal and healthy.

    Ciao.

Thanks for the insight on the fans.  I'll take it in when I get stateside in a few weeks.  Meanwhile, I'll keep checking the boards. There were some guys in the El Capitan Developers boards mentioning fan issues too.  https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/9554

    Hi,

I'm writing to close this thread out and tell anyone interested what happened.

I took my Early 2013 Macbook pro into Apple for service.  They ran lots of tests(while I was sitting there) and my computer didn't fail anything.

The fans were operating within the acceptable ranges.  It still bothered me that I could still hear a noticeable fan noise on power up, so I asked them to send it in to service center to have them run more tests.  Well, they replaced the logic board and gave it back to me.  It still made the noise. A couple days later I brought it in again and the guy at the desk took it into the back to a "quiet room" .  He came back and told me he totally knew what I was talking about. He also has a Macbook Pro of his own.  They took it in and replaced both fans.  It now is fixed and runs quietly like before.

Thanks all for the advice earlier.
