Q: MBP 13 early 2011 - intermittent restarts

I bought the machine second hand in 2013.  It worked fine until about a year ago (~October 2014), when the machine suddenly stopped, and then restarted.  I took no action at the time, just one of those things.  However in the subsequent months the problem recurred and became unacceptably frequent.  The machine will now run for anything from a few seconds to a few weeks and then fail.

The fault symptoms are somewhat variable.  Sometimes it appears as a kernel panic, sometimes not.  Sometimes it will attempt a restart but stick with the three beeps memory warning.  On two occasions it has displayed some minor video artefacts during the restart.  There doesn't seem to be any recurring trigger for the failure: it can be playing music in iTunes, browsing with Firefox, pretty much anything.

I've run Apple hardware tests on it - nothing found.

The machine is only using standard software, no games, nothing fancy.

When supplied, the machine had 4+4G of memory and a 320G hard disk.  As part of eliminating possible causes I changed the HD for a 500G version, and replaced the memory three times (using Crucial memory sticks).  I completely wiped the HD, did a clean install of Yosemite, and reinstalled all the programs from originals; I transferred only the data from the old contents.

The machine has been to the Genius Bar something like six times.  The first time they recognised the symptoms and said it was the hard disk cable.  This was replaced and the machine worked fine.  For a couple of months.  There were a couple of occasions when the Genius Bar said that as the machine hadn't failed while they had it there was nothing they could do - which was not unreasonable, intermittent faults are tricky!

Then the Genius Bar replaced the motherboard.  Again the machine worked fine, for a while, but then it was back to the same behaviour - although the symptoms had changed slightly.

For the last six months or so I have been saving copies of the console log and error reports (when generated), in order to help (I hope) the Genius Bar when I go next time, planned for the end of November.  There's nothing glaringly obvious to me that gives any clues as the cause of the failures, the failing processes seem to be arbitrary.  That said, I'm no expert when it comes to interpreting error reports.

At the moment my best guess is that the second mother board was / is also faulty.  The chances of that happening must be pretty small but what else is there?

I'd be grateful if someone can help me "think different" about the problem!

Thanks

Keith

    Post an Etrecheck report:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Also see if you have a kernel panic report and if so, post it as well:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

    Ciao.

    Thanks for taking an interest!

I have 30 console logs from June - October, and 19 error reports (automatically generated by the system and sent to Apple) over the same period.

This gives a slightly low indication of the fault incidence as there are some occasions in which the machine doesn't get through the startup before it fails again.  It's also a rough guide to the proportion of kernel panics to "other" failures.

I have attached the latest error report.

I've just run etrecheck and attach the report.

Rid the MBP of Little Snitch and the Norton AV.  Check the developers web sites for uninstall instructions.

I would also recommend deleting Goolgle Chrome and all of its parts.  It is a resource glutton among browsers.

    See if performance improves.

    Reset the SMC and NVRAM:

What's the rationale behind your suggestions, please?

On Chrome, I'm the only one who uses Chrome on the machine, my wife, whose machine it is, uses Firefox exclusively, so I'm inclined to discount it as an issue.  iTunes, Firefox, and Mail are the major uses on the machine, the relative frequency of failures among these is probably a function of their relative frequency of use.

SMC and NVRAM have been reset several times.

I've not tried a safe boot, but it could be weeks (or days, or seconds!) before the fault recurs.  Meanwhile the machine is not fully functional.

You seem to be suspecting a software problem, what leads you to that conclusion please?

I could / should perhaps add that when I return the machine to the Genius Bar I put the original 320G disk in it with a clean install of Yosemite and nothing else.  The fault still occurs.

When I see software installed that is not necessary and can very well be detrimental to the operation of a MBP, I point that out to the user.  Should you have doubts about my recommendations, search these forums and determine what others have said about the items in question.

Actually not the case, though software may be the issue.  Usually the HDD is the 'problem child' hence the Safe Boot\ suggestion.  Perhaps you should boot into the recovery partition, select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu and run FIRST AID.  I would do it even though you indicate that the reinstall of the 320GB HDD does not solve the problem.

    Ciao.

Non-Apple "anti-virus" software serves no beneficial purpose on a Mac. Get rid of it. It can only cause problems, or exacerbate existing ones. Read for yourself why Symantec's own VP of information security recently declared "anti-virus" software "dead".

One or more of the following may be applicable:

Uninstall Norton Internet Security for Mac

Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh by using the RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility

Unfortunately, the WSJ article seems to be behind a pay wall.

The AV gives me occasional warnings about files and web sites, I think I'll hang on for a while before going naked on the net!

I have it installed on all three machines (and many more before these) without problems.

As the problem occurs with and without the AV installed, the AV seems unlikely to be be the culprit in this case.

I'm interested in the idea of the HD being the problem child, it sort of ties in to the Apple Genius first thought that the problem was a disk cable - although that proved not to be the case.

I struggle to see how the HD could be the issue in this case as it happens with two separate HDs, one of which has a clean install of Yosemite on it.

I'd like to be clear on why a safe boot would be of use in the case of a HD failure.  As I understand it, a safe boot starts the machine in "minimum configuration", non-Apple kernel extensions and so on disabled.  How would this impact a possible disk problem?

During the course of this adventure I bought a further essentially identical MBP which I have used as an "in case" backup.  This evening I'm going to swap the HDs of the two machines and see where the fault presents itself.

Is there anything to be deduced from the error report which might help?

Then you have not read the Apple support article carefully:Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 3.05.08 PM.png

In general, that sounds like a good idea.

What error report are you referring to?

Thanks for clarifying the additional benefits of safe mode.  Do you happen to know whether the tests done during safe mode start up are any different from those run by the Apple Disk Utility?  Disk Utility and Disk Warrior both give the startup disk a clean bill of health.

Additionally, these would be software tests wouldn't they?  Consistency of the disk content, correct directory information, correct free space tables and so on?  When you mentioned the disk as the possible / probable problem I read into that that you were suspecting a hardware fault.

After each failure I run Disk Utility but this has yet to indicate a problem.  I also run DiskWarrior from another boot drive, this occasionally finds errors eg in the volume information which I have been assuming were caused by the crash, rather than the cause of it.  As that's an assumption, it could be wrong.

Sometimes the failure / restart happens very early in the startup sequence, maybe a few seconds into the process.  Obviously I cannot capture any problem reports for such failures but they do suggest (to me) something other than a software problem.  I accept of course that serious disk corruption in the initial boot accesses could cause the problem, but as the disk *appears to be* normally OK this seems unlikely.

The error report to which I referred was the one I posted above in this message:

Yet you are using Google Chrome, a product that infests your Mac at a privileged level in the same manner as a "virus", harvesting your personal information and constantly uploading it to Google, so they can sell it. Google "cognitive dissonance".

None of my Macs use any non-Apple "anti-virus" garbage. Most of them are connected to the Internet all the time, so logically they are vulnerable to those same dangerous files and websites as yours. I wonder what I'm missing?

You're obviously missing viruses and attacks, lucky you, long may it remain so.  I hope you never have the inconvenience of having to sort out the consequences of any nasties.

You're the one having to sort out the consequences of installing totally ineffective and useless garbage on your Mac. The effects of it are worse than the illusory "viruses and attacks" you fear. As long as "Symantec" products remain installed, your Mac cannot be maintained.
