Q: Power Mac G5 Keyboard and Screen

Return from a 6 month trip, retired and was in YNP.  My G5 will come on but the fan runs for a long time on and off. The keyboard, mouse will not work and the screen will not come on. I have two screens attached two the G5. One comes on and but only shows my screen saver. Not sure what to do first in order to fix. Possible Keyboard needs to be replace or the box that attaches the screen to the computer. I am not a wiz but know how it is all hooked up. Lost a brother at the age of 50, all of this belong to him and a friend of his came over and set it up several years ago. Concern because it has all of his life work - Photography on it. Should I take the keyboard and screen to a Apple Store first? The computer was back up before I left and also turn off during the time I was gone. Any suggestions would be great.

Was the computer unplugged from wall power while you were absent? If so, the internal backup battery, or "PRAM" battery is probably dead and that can, in some Mac models, affect booting.

Will the computer start if you press and hold the SHIFT key during boot? That can sometimes get around a dead PRAM battery and let the computer boot. Once it boots with the SHIFT key depressed, reboot normally. You should get a usable desktop.

Should I take the keyboard and screen to a Apple Store first?

Apple will no longer look at a computer that old. If you need professional help, you will need an independent provider familiar with older Macs.

Allan it was left plug in a surge protector. I tired turning on and hold the shift key and it sounds like it is trying to boot. The one screen shows a greywhite only sounds ike something is trying to start and then the fan starts running really loud .

I thought they would not look at it in the Apple store.

I move my mouse to another laptop and it works. I even unplug the extra screen and just left one plug in and move the keyboard plug to the back of the screen. No luck, right now you can hear like it is starting up, fan running. I guess I will need to find an outside professional help. Can I attach the back up to my MacPro I brought last year and pull off his photos?

I was going in with the keyboard and have them check it out. I thought I needed a new keyboard but the screen never shows the apple when turning on it goes from grey white to a screen saver only. I can do nothing with with keyboard or the mouse attached. Mouse works because I tired on my MacPro.

    I certainly appreciate your help

That should be doable, but depends a bit on how you backed up or what you used to do it.

OK, was it a drag & drop copy, or Time Machine, or some other method of putting the files on there?
