Cant download newst ios version on my ipod 3rd generation

I updated my itunes to the newsest version to update my Ipod touch 3rd generation. I clicked the "check for update" under summary in itunes and it said that ios 6.1.6 was the current version and that is it. I really want to update it because most of my apps require at least ios 7 i order to update. Thanks
