Q: New Apple TV - no "up next" when streaming iTunes music from PC

On the old Apple TV when you stream music you can access the "Up Next" menu on the fly by pressing the Select button on the remote and holding it for 3 seconds.  This allows you to browse your library, select a song and queue it up to "Play Next" after the one that is currently playing (rather than just playing it immediately).  You can also "Add to Up Next" and essentially build a playlist while listening to music.  The new Apple TV does not appear to have this functionality.  The select button just starts the song you're clicking on whether you hold it down or click it.  No amount of swiping, pressing, clicking, waving, etc. with the new fancy remote has any other effect.  It seems strange for the new product to roll back functionality that the old product had.

Anyone found a way to do this?

Just got my AppleTV hooked up, went to listen to some music, and immediately noticed the same thing. I like to use the Up Next feature to load up some songs from my iCloud library and sit back and listen. Very disappointed and hope it comes back in an update.

The closest I can get is an option to "Play Next."  If you double-click the remote while you're on the Now Playing screen, you'll get a list of the other songs in the current album (or playlist, I assume).  From there you can scroll right or left to other songs in that list and then scroll up to the three dots button to get the option to Play Next.

That's a pretty far cry from the functionality of the older Apple TV and its remote that allows you to access more options with fewer button presses on more menus.

I'm surprised that you can't side-swipe on the remote while browsing the music library on any song to get a menu to either Play Next or Add to Up Next. Side-swipe currently has no functionality at all in those menus.

This may be a deal breaker for me, and will probably end up in a return. I also have a pretty large music library and tend to spend an evening listening to songs from albums that start with a particular letter of the alphabet. Left off on "R" with my old AppleTV and felt like an idiot with all the thumb scrolling I had to do to get down to "S" on the new one. No way to hold down the button to scroll and Siri won't help.

I, too, am shocked to find that this brand new, highly-touted product doesn't have the simple (but useful) functionality of the older Apple TV sets. I have a large music collection on iTunes Match and use my Apple TV to stream my music daily. In the past, I've  either made my own playlists (loading one song at a time) or asked the Apple TV to create a genius list from a particular song. These were a huge part of my daily usage of Apple TV and I never expected a newer, supposedly better product to lose these options.

I'm hoping Apple reads these posts b/c the fact that I can only play all songs from a particular artist or just one album at a time is a huge disappointment. Seriously, Apple, we need an update immediately to restore this simple functionality. If you're going to continue offering iTunes Match, then you have to allow those of us who subscribe to enjoy our music with multiple play options.

I just called Apple Support so I could log this comment for their team. The rep I spoke with said that my comment will be forwarded to the appropriate team and that the more people who call and log the same complaint, the better. So don't hesitate to call Apple and let them know you want the same functionality we had in older versions of Apple TV on the new one (v. 4).

TVOS 9.2 released today has Siri voice play-next functionality. Saying "play Carry On by Fun next" works.

Click the remote (top part) when you are in 'Now Playing'. Sort out your list from there-on.

In the race to "improve" tech, useful functions, those nuance functions that I find by accident or intention fall overboard and are "replaced" by some 2/10 convolution.

I really think I'm going to set up the "old" A TV on a spare HDMI, so I can play trailers and choose up next songs, 2 of my most used "feel good" functions.

Also now I'm going to have to research when I "upgrade" that I'm not in fact downgrading.
