I'm familiar with this problem and know it can be chronic especially when clips are copied to new sequences multiple times, or if you're trying to open an existing FC6 project with FC7. In this situation I started with a fresh install of OS 10.6.8 and a fresh install of FC7 on an earlier well maintained Mac Pro. I'm opening projects created in FC6. The usual story is that despite good connections to well organized media, FC7 will not allow wave forms to appear. Instead you get those pesky little X's and a black blank audio browser. This would occasionally happen in FC6, (where the projects were created), but like so many other folks, the problem would mysteriously rectify itself. Traditional fixes are either trashing FCP Preferences, or trashing waveform cache. I've already trashed Preferences - no go. I hesitate to trash the wave cache in the scratch disk because there's a HUGH amount that would probably all have to be re-rendered. There's other approaches but very tedious: I could export entire pieces to AIFF's, then re-import them back in - that would surely work but it sounds a little ridiculous. So instead, I went back to FC6 to finish the project. Too much time invested in the setting up the Mac Pro. Its disappointing indeed.
