ksuuttywxw, like you I see Apple as marketing the iPad Pro as a PC replacement (well documented in Phil Schiller's 50 Million old pc's to replace comment in last fall's keynote).
I like to think of Steve Jobs' comment that there are cars and trucks and they have different purposes. Steve conveniently forgot the SUV category which combines cars and trucks so nicely that you can now buy SUVs in every size imaginable. People like flexibility and UTILITY. That's why they sell so very well (gas prices notwithstanding). Try and imagine a car company that doesn't sell an SUV. Would the biggest car company try and compete without it? I think not.
So I would posit that the pc market has it right with 2in1's or detachables (the SUV of computing devices). Apple continues to fiddle while Rome burns on this issue. While I would agree that the iPad is meant to be a device that transcends the PC, I would simultaneously argue that to be transcendent, you need to not just equal the capability of the existing device (PC), but transcend it. And Apple with iPad is almost there too. If you had a file system, ability to save several docs at the same time, and use a pointing device (I prefer trackpads, and yes there is a very limited one built into the iPad keyboard which can't interact with a spreadsheet), then and only then would have a truly transcendent device (and these key features are operating system issues, the apps exist but are very weak implementations).
It's so easy to implement both, that it just makes sense to do it already. Minor enhancements can make all the difference. And this is no concession. This is where we are heading. SUVs are the 2in1's .. even Steve would have been forced to agree eventually. Meanwhile where is the innovation? A watch? A keyboard that gets power from the ipad. That's about it really. I know because I buy a ton of Apple gear because it works elegantly and reliably. Why does my favorite tech manufacturer have to miss out on the logical evolution of the personal computer? Man, if this is just fear of cannibalizing already shrinking macbook sales, then God do we have a problem. Welcome to the future. Steve Jobs, we barely knew ye.
Note... bought an HP Spectre x2 12T CTO. Amazing 2in1, and the trackpad and touchscreen are just about up to the level of the iPad. Yes, they've been given enough time to do it. I'm keeping the iPad Pro for now (bought the best and all accessories), but I actually think my conscience is saying get rid of it while it still has value. Costs much less than the iPad Pro and bests it in almost every category (not speakers, not battery (but close).
