Should I update this iPad 4 to iOS 9?

I have a trusty old iPad 4, which gets heavy use, that never got updated past iOS 6.

Of course, it's now too late to bring it up to speed with 7 or 8. Should I attempt to update it to iOS 9, or just let it live out its life as a happy iOS 6?

Having this iPad working properly is pretty critical for me right now, and I can't afford to risk having it bricked or borked or slowed down. (It also has an old battery that hasn't got maximum life left in it, so that's another factor.)

Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with an iPad 4 running older software, updating it to iOS 9?

MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Is there a particular reason you are looking to update? Are there apps you cannot run? If all is well with your current iOS, and you can't afford to have to deal with potential issues which may or may not occur, then I would vote No on an upgrade....

Only you can decide if you want to try, but again, if you don't need the update then not sure why you are contemplating it?

Bottom line is that the majority of people have absolutely no issues with upgrading their devices to iOS 9. But a small number of people do have issues, and there is no way to know ahead of time if you might have a device that would fall into the second category (and no way to go back if you do).

Best of luck,

Try ALL of these.

Try resetting All Settings found in the Settings App under General and in the right column under Reset.

Try resetting histories and deleting/resetting caches in all of the web browsers you use.

If you use Safari, these functions maybe l in the Settings App under Safari.

Other web browsers have their settings inside of the running app, itself.

Try turning on Reduced Motion.

This is found in the Settings App in the General tab the left panel.

In the right panel look under Accessibility, the look for Reduce Motion and turn this feature "On".

You should see an appreciable performance increase on all iPad 2, 3 and 4 models.

In the Settings App under the General Tab, in the right column, look for Background App Refresh and turn this setting to "off".

Try a reset of your iPad by holdings down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

Good Luck!

Ideally, your iDevice should maintain a minimum free storage amount of 4- 6 GBs or greater on any iDevice (the more free space, the better) , plus, more than 50%-60% battery status to ensure proper operation, as well as, to ensure the possibility of a successful iOS upgrade/update installation.

In addition it is best to upgrade an iDevice connected up to a computer running iTunes with you iDevice sync'd and backed up through iTunes rather than Over The Air (OTA) using a wireless WiFi connection.

I update ALL my iDevices connected up to my iMac and sync'd over USB through iTunes.

I have NEVER, EVER had an issue with any iOS updates.

Why should I have to do all that? Some of that I've tried and it's still slow. It's a buggy os from Apple. i will be calling them eventually because this iPad Air 2 is only about 4 months old. My iPhone 5s just went out of warranty. If they can't make an operating system that as it updates to a newer version handles everything it needs to so it will run fast and smooth like it ought to no matter what you're doing like surfing the Internet and using a basic app then they cant make a good operating system at all. I don't know who's in charge of iOS at Apple but they are failing miserably.

Something on your iPad has caused your iPad issues.

My iPad 3 and my brand new iPod Touch 6 are running iOS 9 without nary an issue.

How much storage is your iPad Air 2 and how much free storage have you used?

If you have a brand new iPad Air 2 how did you update? Over the Air or through a computer using iTunes (the iTunes method is the better method of upgrading/updating iOS devices)?

Bring your iPad Air 2 into an Apple store for them to figure out your issues.

Backup your iPad before doung this.

Good Luck!
