how do you make minimise buttons reappear?

Question

In different apps/programs, the stoplight buttons disappear. How do you stop this from happening?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Sounds like those apps are opening in Full Screen Mode, press Esc to go back to normal mode, quit the app and relaunch

and see if it reverrts back to normal screen mode.
