I understand that you are running into difficulty getting music on your iPod nano. There are a couple troubleshooting steps that I could recommend for this issue. I would start with disabling any security software and then test syncing.
The following might happen if your security software is causing an issue with iTunes:
- Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch aren't recognized in iTunes, or they won't back up, restore, update, sync, or activate.
Resolve issues between iTunes and third-party security software
Next, lets test to make sure that your music plays in iTunes. If your music does play in iTunes, lets attempt to manually manage music and only drag a couple songs to your iPod. The article below will walk you through this process.
Move content from iTunes on your computer to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you are still unable to get music to your device, test with a different sync cable. I would also suggest going through a restore.
Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

- Security software isnt an issue.... latest version of itunes is installed, and the iPod is being recognised and syncing with itunes
- I have done a factory restore (several times) and the issue is unresolved - essentially itunes says the sync is successful, but no music or podcasts are actually copied over. Even though music is shown to be on the ipod when viewing the device in itunes
- Have used two different sync cables and the same issue

Thanks for the follow-up. I see that you indicate that security software is not an issue, but is any installed or enabled? I ask as this can cause an issue with data being transferred to and from the device even if it is recognized in iTunes and your computer. Also, were you able to test manually managing music and dragging a couple songs to the device to see if they sync?

- I followed the article suggestions regarding security - there is nothing in the way, or affecting the device. The device is being recognised.
- I tried manually dragging music to the device - the files supposedly moved over and I can see them in the file browser in itunes, but when I disconnect the device and click on the music icon the ipod says there is no music on the device
