Q: Different Serial Number on body case and logic board

I have a problem with my MBP early 2011 and bring it to Authorized Apple store and claim free technical services to fix GPU crash.

When they received my MBP, they scan completely and just GPU has a warning sign on MRi scan. I see on that the same SN.

But after two days, technician call me and said the SN on body case and logic board are different. But I believe, Me or my Partner never bring it to another service center (not Authorized Apple store).

Is it possible if someone change the back body case without change the Logic board SN (in case my partner lie about it).

And they said if it does not match in any way, they cannot fix MBP for free as Apple said they guarantee all GPU (AMD) problems from 2011 production.

If my MBP has ever fix on Authorized dealer, is it possible they're have the history? Similar to Medical Checkup History?

Here are places where you may find the serial number:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204347

The question(s) is, why are there two serial numbers and does it really matter?

I do not propose to answer those questions.

    Ciao.

    Thank you OGELTHORPE.

My Mac is a gift from a friend at NY. She not use this and ship it to my country.

After 2 days the technician call me that the Serial Number on the body case is not match with Serial Number on Logic Board. They said they cannot continue to fix the GPU if I don't know which one is the original SN that came with the box, and they cannot order the parts or even fix my MBP.

IMHO, They should be able to follow the Serial Number stamped on the logic board and order the parts. But why do they make it difficult? Is it because this services and the parts are free of charge??

If both serial numbers are for the same model/year MBP, does it then make any difference if it is malfunctioning?  Now the bottom panel will fir a number of different MBPs, so I would agree that was is on the logic board should take preference.

All I can advise you is to take the problem up the chain of command and get a clear and precise answer.  Understand I am not an Apple employee and I do not make such decisions.

    Ciao.

This issue here is that if the Logic board serial and the bottom case serial differ then the device has been modified by someone other then Apple.  At that point any warranties or quality programs become null.  They will no longer service the device even for a fee.

    Thank you OGELTHORPE and bryan.vance.

I just got notified by my partner that she goes to Authorised Apple store to replaced the Logic Board. That's why the S/N are different. But how can I proceed then?

Did apple save that history for that MBP? My partner has no Idea about the S/N or anything, shes living at NY and I'm at Indonesia. She just knew that it has to be repaired and brought it to Apple Store and fixed it. But she didn't know the S/N or anything about it is important. Tomorrow I have to provide the Logic Board S/N, so Apple Store here can proceed to order new parts.

Is it possible to ask Apple about the S/N by My partner at NY?

If the repair was done by Apple there should be a record of it in their data base.

    Ciao.

Is the MBP listed in your products?

Glad the Apple (APL-CARE) there have all the record of it in their data base. (I will keep update this post later)

But unfortunately, and for some reasons, it cannot be done by local store or they just refuse to handle it, even they are Authorised Dealer and Service Center.
