Record iPhone 4s screen with El Cap MacBook?

Hi everyone, I have an iPhone 4s with iOS 9, and I am trying to video record it's screen onto Quicktime Player on a 2013 MacBook Pro running OS X El Capitan. I have a third party USB cable, so that might be at fault. It does not show up in the list of available cameras when I open new Quicktime movie recording. The phone knows that it's connected and the Mac imports all the new photos and videos. It works with a friends iPhone 6 connected via the lightning cable that came with the phone. Any ideas?

As Nicole said, this feature is not supported in the iPhone 4S.

Also, sorry for nitpicking, but the 4S does not have a Lightning connector; it has a 30-pin dock connector.

Now, onto the subject at hand:

one way to record the 4S screen is to use Airplay.

AirServer is a mac application that turns the mac into an Airplay receiver (so that it is seen on the iPhone as a choice for Airplay, like an AppleTV would). It can display and record your iPhone screen. Just select Airplay, choose the mac, and turn on mirroring; then start recording on the mac.
