is it ok to use my old 1600 ram from 2012 iMac in new 2015 one?

hi
quick question, is it ok to use two 8gb sticks of 1600 ram from my old 2012 iMac in the new lae 2015 27" ?


i don't mind if its a little bit slower than the faster ram it comes with .


as long as its compatible ill go ahead and fit it to give me 24gb again :-)


whats the apple official view?

I doubt you can successfully use that old RAM in the new machine. Macs tend to be very fussy about RAM, particularly the speed. I suspect you will get, at a minimum, kernel panics. One tool you may be able help sort this out is at OWC (Other World Computing, http://www.macsales.com/). Admittedly, they are a vendor and have things they'd like to sell you, but they are a very reputable vendor and have many tools to help figure out just what RAM will be required for your machine. I trust them and am using their RAM in my iMac.

As pokey b says, very likely that it won't be compatible and will cause all kinds of problems. iMacs are very picky about the RAM modules that are installed - they must be to the exact spec. As well as Macsales, Crucial are good for RAM upgrades as well. I've bought from both companies and they guarantee their modules will work - and I think they both offer a lifetime guarantee. Not sure whether that's my life or the life of the Mac 🙂.
