Q: Photos program and using an external drive

I have placed all my photos on an external drive.  How to I get Photos to access pictures from the external drive?

How to I get Photos to access pictures from the external drive?

Do you want to import these photos into your Photos library  or do you want to have photos access the photos on your external drive without importing them into your Photos library? Photos can add photos to the library without copying them to the library, but that is a risky setup. If you need to replace the drive or move the photos to a different drive, it will be difficult to reconnect the referenced originals.

the recommended way to access your photos on the external drive would be to create your Photos Library on the  external drive and to use "File > Import" to copy the photos into your Photos Library.
