Q: 2 phones with one email address?

I finally upgraded my mom's 10 year old Blackberry and got her an iPhone.  Now my dad is jealous and wants one too. I'm thinking it'll make a nice Christmas present.

 

I have a question though. The two of them share an email address. Is that going to cause problems? Can I just make separate Apple ID for my dad?

    Yes, you can and should make a separate Apple ID for your dad.  The email set up is not tied to an Apple ID so they can continue to share an email account if they wish.  You could also set up Family Sharing so they can share apps, music, videos, photos, etc.   More on Family Sharing

     

    Email is pretty simple for most email providers these days. Hopefully they have IMAP.  POP3 can get tricky as it likes to just download email to one device but you'd have run into this with the other devices and solved the problems I believe on the server side. For IMAP just enter the same username and password on the individual devices.

    Yeah they use GMail and they get it off both of their laptops and Mom's iPhone so the email itself shouldn't be an issue.

     

    Just curious if anything else would get messed up with imessage or anything

    If they get texts sent via that shared email address they would both get it, but they probably don't do it that way.  Texts probably use their phone numbers.  And you can disable the text by email on an email address by email address basis so no, I don't think there will be a problem.  Certainly none that can't be overcome as email set up and messages set ups are separate in iOS.

    They can use family sharing and a single AppleID for iTunes and App Store purchases. But they should each have a separate AppleID for iCloud and imessages. If they use the same AppleID for iCloud, they will not only be sharing one iCloud email, but they will be sharing the same call history, contacts, calendars, notes and anything else sync'd via iCloud. If they share the same AppleID for iMessage then they will be sharing a single imessage account as well.

     

    So, your mom can use her existing AppleID and your dad just needs another gmail account to create his own AppleID. He can still use the shared gmail in mail as that is not tied to any AppleID.
