error (-54) cannot copy to macintosh hd

I have an iPhone 6, I updated to IOS 9.1 (latest update), I have a Macbook PRO 2015 running el capitan, all good until I upgraded to the new IOS on iPhone 6. When I go to manually back up my iPhone on the computer I get " unable to copy to the Macintosh HD, unknown error (-54), however on ITunes it shows as backed up.

Any suggestions? do ii ignore this? is anyone else having this problem after upgrading? Same happen on my iPad 2 after upgrading. Unfortunately my last back up to my Mac Pro , seems to have been replaced by this one, but not sure it is a correct or complete backup.

iPhone 6, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Follow the steps given by msg- it was the only thing that worked for me, and I had tried various other suggestions...

In El Capitan I couldn't do the "repair disk permissions" as such, but I carried out the "first aid" that is offered in Disk Utility now, and then followed msg-'s steps.

To boot in safe mode, shutdown or restart your Mac, and quickly press and hold the SHIFT key when you hear the start up tone, release when the apple logo appears...https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
