3rd Gen shuffle won't connect, help please

Hi. So I recently obtained an iPod Shuffle 3rd gen. It's in excellent conditions outside and the switch feels very sturdy. However when I plug the headphone jack to the computer via USB (original from Apple), nothing comes up. I get that sound from the computer when something has been plugged in in a USB slot and immediately after, I get the sound when you unplug something. iTunes pops up but nothing appears. Also if I have the My Computer window open, I see for a brief second a D:\ drive pop up and go away immediately. Have the latest iTunes version, it is a USB 2.0 plug, and have the original apple cable. I don't know what to do, anyone have any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
