Q: 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo kernel panics

System:

-Mid 2007 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Macbook

-Upgraded to 4 GB (2x2) RAM (bought from OWC, only capable of using 3 GB, but paired for better performance)

-60 GB internal SSD

-10.6.8 v1.1 (build 10k549 with supposed optical audio fix, clean install from disk and upgraded to 10.6.8 through software update, supports Tiger through Lion)

Peripherals:

-EyeTV 250 plus via USB

-55" Vizio LED TV via MiniDVI-HDMI HDMI Sony Amp set to 1080P

-Toslink Optical Audio to Sony Amp

Problem:

I have refurbed my old macbook for use as an HTPC and am getting repeated kernel panics almost anytime I have audio or video.  I have had kernel panics in EyeTV, Plex, HBO Go in Firefox and Netflix in Firefox.  There are numerous discussions in eyetv forums about similar problems, especially in Lion, thus the downgrade to snow leopard.  Elgato blamed apple, which I believe to be correct given my problems in other apps.  That lead me to discussions about the optical audio problem in 10.6.8, but I have Apple's patch installed (build 10k549).  I haven't had time at home to perform further diagnostics, i.e. Analog Audio, System Audio, HDMI bypass of Amp, different monitors, lower resolution etc.  I did unplug the computer from everything last night and was successfully able to play music out of Plex Home Theatre and watch an HBO Go video for a few minutes.  I also looked at the two most recent crash logs and both reference the Intel GMA 950 graphics chip (kernel extensions in backtrace). This is a bit of a surprise as I was expecting it to be the core audio.  Either way, I do seem to have it narrowed down to the A/V peripherals.

I know others have had similar problems, but Im wondering what solutions were used.  I would really like to have digital audio into the amp, because it supports more than 2 channels.  I definitely need the big screen capabilities, or I can't use this as an HTPC.  Thoughts? Solutions? Other threads to read?

Post a recent panic report. Could help.....

I got a laugh that El Gato blamed Apple....it's their responsibility to make their apps and hardware work with Apple's OS, not the other way around.

It looks to me to be ram related. Try running your Macbook on 2GB of ram and see if the panics persist. If they do swap out the ram and run it on the other 2GB stick to test.

What are the specs on your ram? The older OS doesn't report them.

The full details of the installed RAM are here:

    Couple updates:

Tried trouble shooting last night adding peripherals one at a time and adjusting resolution.  Didnt get a kernel panic but Netflix was unwatchable.  HBO Go was nearly flawless.  Vevo movies through Plex Home Theater looked good.  The one thing I did notice was my CPU running at 150-166% for flash in activity monitor during netflix (edit: just saw that's normal with a dual core.  Also noticed the fan running a lot, and its a brand new fan so its way less noisy than the old one.)

Do you recommend testing each 2 GB stick of ram individually or swapping back to my old 2 x 1 GB sticks (I upgraded from original 2 x 512 in 2010 to install snow leopard)?

I should mention that I also noticed the entire firefox window flickering in HBO go (windowed mode and full screen) before it stabilized and worked fine.

I would test each 2GB stick individually AND with the original ram. OWC sells top quality ram and you have the correct spec but even they can sell a bad stick now and then.
