Downloading open office

I am still using Snow Leopard but, in order t sync my Iphone 5s to my computer (MacBook Pro, 2011), I will have to upgrade to a higher OS. That's because I unwisely upgraded the IOS on my Iphone and can't go back t the earlier system. But I have hundreds of files on Appleworks, which won't work anymore with Lion and above. It was recommended to me by a Mac supervisor that I download Open Office but, when I tired (twice), my computer froze. I didn't try to download the lasted version, by the way, but tried 4.01, which they say will work with Snow Leopard. Any ideas here about this?

This really didn't help me. I'm not that tech savvy to know exactly what you mean. I don't think I have a large enough hard drive on my computer to partition it the way you suggest. A Mac technician considered that, but having access to my computer, realized it isn't large enough.

I like Appleworks, finding it to meet all my needs for a word processor, spreadsheet and data base, and am ****** off at Apple for making it obsolete. Particularly since they don't have anything like it. I know they have Pages, but that's probably a lot more word processor than I need. And EXcel is probably more spreadsheet than I need.

I'm not wedded to Open Office; it was just something the Mac consultant suggested. But I can't seem to download it anyway; my Mac keeps freezing up and I can't even doing a force quit; just have to turn off the computer.
