Last gen 17" Macbook Pro rendered useless after latest OSX update.

I used to be very happy with my 17" (last generation produced before 17" was discontinued) macbook pro, however that has steadily changed over the last year or two. Each progression of OSX has made my macbook more and more unresponsive and unusable. At this point, I hardly even turn it on. It will literally take 5 minutes for me to change tabs in my web browser, 10 minutes to launch a new program, videos randomly freeze for 5 minutes or more and then resume. All of this assuming I can even do anything on my laptop -- usually it is stuck on the pinwheel of death, and I can't even click anything. I noticed these issues began to creep up an iteration or two after Snow Leopard, and things really started to go downhill with Mavericks. I know I am not alone. By the time I went to Yosemite, my laptop was essentially bricked as 5-30 minute lags for each of my clicks is unacceptable. I had hoped that El Capitan would help, but it is even worse than I could have possibly imagined. I've read as many posts as I can about resolving this issue -- from minimizing windowserver, to turning off opacity, defragging, and killing unneeded processes -- but none of this has helped.

My question is, am I simply out of luck? I feel cheated that my previously flawlessly working laptop has slowly fallen apart before my eyes with each iteration of OSX since Snow Leopard. The sad thing is windows runs flawlessly on it, so I know it is OSX. What can I do other than buying a new 2k laptop with a smaller screen? I like having 17" screen for a reason -- even if it is lower reso than newer generations.

There are lost of folks using comparable MacBook Pros that are not having your problems. Conspiracy theories are much more fun, but these sorts of problem are far more likely to be caused by stuff you have added or by wonky Hardware than by engineering changes in Mac OS X.

I am assuming you have recently done routine things like restart your Mac more often than weekly, do an SMC Reset, and a PRAM Reset.

I have no idea what sort of tools you are using. There is a little Utility called Etrecheck that can dump a lot of information about your Mac, its Hardware and software. If you would be willing to run it and post results here, it will give Readers and idea of what might be happening.

I'm having the same issue.

Last week it sounded like my fan was dying (which I read could be an impending hard drive failure) so I backed up all my data to an external and did a factory reset....

Had issues with the factory reset because my computer wouldn't connect to the wifi nor would it recognize an ethernet cable so I went to the local genius bar.

The genius bar guy finished setting up my computer and told me it should run practically brand new, and it's doing anything but.

The same night I got back I turned my laptop back on and it wanted me to set up the OS again...

Now it's running incredibly slow. Tells me there is a disk issue when opening docs in Word, and don't even get me started on iMovie (which is an issue because I have a HUGE project due on the 7th...)

I'm out of ideas for what to do.

Tried running apple diagnostics just now and it displayed:

You certainly are doing a wide variety of stuff with this Mac. You have a lot of add-ons, and from many different sources.

I think if this were mine, I would consider removing some of them, at least temporarily. Please do not take anything personally, I am just "thinking out loud" here, not trying to criticize anything you are doing. For example, could you use Screen Sharing instead of loading Air parrot? Do you use Windows often enough to justify having VMWare installed all the time? Do you really need WDC drivers for some drives? most seem to work fine with Mac OS X drivers. Is instant-on really helping? do you want all those canon scanner helpers running all the time?

Your Mac has been up for nine hours, and in that time there was at least once when memory was so low stuff got swapped out:

Virtual Memory Information: (What does this mean?)

353 MB Free RAM

7.65 GB Used RAM (2.98 GB Cached)

29 MB Swap Used

so that would lead me to suggest more RAM may be appropriate for your style of use.

You are still using a rotational drive. Switching to a 2.5" SSD may provide more responsive results for you. Have you had any I/O Errors? Is smart status still "verified"?

Nov 3, 2015 8:27 PM in response to mith36

Hello mith36,

Normally I am quick to recommend an SSD upgrade for people using Yosemite or El Capitan on an older machine. I am in your case too, but you do have some system modifications that go beyond replacing the hard drive. Whether or not you upgrade to an SSD (and I think you should eventually), you should also do a clean install onto a blank hard drive. Migrate over only user documents. Then, manually reinstall only the applications that you really need to use.

I say this because of the following:

1) You have an iCalBuddy program that is constantly crashing

2) aslmanager is your top CPU process. This suggests that some program is repeatedly failing and overwhelming your log files.

3) You have a number of advanced, and failed, launch agents and daemons. Any one of these could be causing problems and you have some really funky ones.

4) You have a number of startup items. These usually work together with some other background process. Startup items were officially disabled in Yosemite. These have been broken for over a year.

And I don't want to gloss over the hard drive. Those 2.5" hard drives tend to die after 2-3 years. Your hard drive has reported some kind of failure anyway. If your hard drive is older than that and you are having problems, then replacing it will likely fix the problem, do no harm, be quite inexpensive, and could avoid a catastrophe. Before SSDs, I used to replace my hard drives every 2 years, whether they showed any signs of problems or not. While SSDs are finally affordable, they still aren't cheap. At least your machine should be about 3 times faster with an SSD. But, I think you should install a bare OS onto the SSD and carefully reinstall only the latest version of all your funky software - carefully.

Hello Grant,

EtreCheck checks the SMART status. It only prints something out if the status isn't "verified". I think people read too much into the "verified" status. If it says "failed", the drive is definitely dead. If it says "verified", the drive may still be dead.

That other "Failed" status is from FileVault. I can't provide any more information. EtreCheck just reports what system_profiler tells it. In this case, system_profiler doesn't like something about that drive and/or volume.

Nov 3, 2015 8:30 PM in response to etresoft

Ok, I will consider adding an SSD. I've had one in my main computer for the OS/apps for years, and it has been amazing.

All the old software used to run just fine back on Snow Leopard. It wasn't until Mavericks things started to fall apart, and since then, I haven't hardly been able to use my computer enough to uninstall/fix any problems due to all the freezing. I will try the SSD and only reinstall what I really use -- which is actually a lot, but I will keep certain things to my desktop (music and video production & games). The problem is I do a lot of things (dj, code, design, play, listen), and I wanted to have all these things at my finger tips.

I was also hoping to see the new MacBooks at the last Apple promo meeting, but it looks like they won't be out until spring 2016, so I will wait to upgrade my laptop till then (and see how it does vs alternatives).

I haven't been keeping up to date on hardware much the last few years -- are there any restrictions to the size of the SSD I purchase for my 17" mid-2010 macbook pro ?

Nov 3, 2015 8:34 PM in response to mith36

Hello again mith36,

Double-check with all of the software you need. Depending on what is supported and what isn't, you might not even be able to upgrade past Snow Leopard.

Unfortunately, there isn't a cut-and-dried answer in this case. You probably have a fair amount of debugging work regardless of direction you take. And SSD will certainly speed up the machine, but the old hard drives don't always fail after 2-3 years. You may be able to erase the hard drive, reinstall the OS, and go from there. One option is to go back to Snow Leopard. Another option is to try to go forward to El Capitan with a fresh install. A third option is to go forward on an SSD using the old drive as a failsafe backup (instead of erasing it). I don't see any real quick fix I'm afraid.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
