Hello,

my system won´t go to sleep mode. Running OSX 10.9.5. on 2012 MBP 13". My external hard drive (for Time machine) prevents sleep when chrome is on. I did

Go to "Terminal",

Type "pmset -g assertions

only in my case it shows "external media" 1. All other processes are at 0. It used to sleep before but no more. What can I do?

Hi b-fade,

In the output from the pmset command, there should be information listed under "Listed by owning process," and "Kernel Assertions." In that list, you should find one or more items that have "ExternalMedia." The line with "ExternalMedia" indicates the name and pid of the process(es) that is keeping your Mac from sleeping.

Feel free to paste the output of the 'pmset -g assertions' in your reply. This way we can go about identifying the process that's keeping your Mac from sleeping and a method for getting your Mac to sleep properly!

Cheers!

b-fade,

Based on the recent pmset output, there's no longer a process holding an ExternalMedia assertion. However, some process has caused coreaudiod to implement a different assertion (any of which have the ability to prevent your system from entering a sleep state as scheduled).

In order to identify the offending process that's causing a particular assertion to keep your system awake, try quitting an application at a time, then running the pmset command again to see if the assertion has been released. In the case of a browser like Chrome, various tabs or extensions (rather than the browser itself) can cause assertions to be implemented. If it does turn out that quitting Chrome releases all assertions, you might consider using Chrome's task manager to further isolate the offending tab or extension that's not releasing assertions.

thank you for the continuing support,

I really cannot identify the process that is preventing sleep mode, because it has been working flawlessly for the last 5 days again. I suspected chrome or my USB hub to be the preventer. Howsoever, the report at present looks like this:

BM$ pmset -g assertions

Only minor issue remeining is the download section in the lower chrome bar, where downloads are shown in black with white letters when I exit full screen mode. when I move the cursor to them, it switches back to normal black on white.
