How do I retrieve my admin password in El Capitan?

How do I retrieve my admin password in El Capitan. I recently upgraded to El Capitan through App Store download. Today I wanted to change the name of a folder and got the menu saying log in as admin. When I entered my password from before, it only shakes the little box ( really irritating! ). what do I do to either get the old one back or change my password?
