I am trying to connect my Mackbook to a Samsung TV via a HDMI lead - I can see the wallpaper but cannot see any photos or video - can hear sound only.
Is there a function on the Macbook which allows photos and video to be viewed on the TV?

It sounds like your display is set to extend your desktop, rather than mirror it because you cannot see any of the icons or windows that you open. You can change that in the settings with the info from the help site for Mac OS 10.11:
