Point of information

10.10 is Yosemite

10.9 is Mavericks

If you can install either of these, then you can install El Capitan 10.11

And I am surprised that Amazon is selling illegal copies of any Apple products. eBay or Craig's List maybe, but Amazon? Strange.

NOTE: bootlegged Apple software is one of the vectors malware is inserted into OS X.

I'm not surprised at all. Most of what's being sold on Amazon these days is not sold by Amazon. They're just a middle man. They don't care where the money comes from. They have an army of lawyers to insulate them from any accusations of wrongdoing. Amazon is nearly as bad as eBay these days. You have to be really careful when buying from them to make sure you're getting something they're selling themselves or make darn sure you vet the actual seller.

Sorry about the original mismatch between the number and label.

Very disappoint to not be able to get legitimate copies of older operating systems. While they now provide new operating systems for free, it gets expensive replacing all the other software that will no longer work with the new OS, not to mention the hassle of finding, obtaining, and installing the replacement software. I'm not well versed on programming, but wonder why the new operating systems can't be programmed to continue supporting all software supported by previous OSs. If support is deliberately shed to force purchase of additional software, I'm not sure that's any more ethical than offering bootleg copies on Amazon.

I'd still like to be able to find a legitimate copy of 10.9 or 10.10, but it doesn't appear that I will.

May I suggest that going forward, that you download and quit the install for each new "Free" OS X release so that you have the option to install or not in the future. And if you have the room, keep the installer, just in case Apple stops making the release available to users that previously downloaded it.

Very disappoint to not be able to get legitimate copies of older operating systems.
