As soon as I hook up the HDMI cable to the Apple TV (4th gen), it switches the Denon receiver to the TV audio input. If I select a different input on the receiver, it switches back to the TV audio input. The only way to restore normal operation to the receiver is to disconnect the HDMI cable from the Apple TV. Tried using different HDMI cables to no avail.
This sounds like a CEC HMDI control issue where the Apple TV is sending a signal to the receiver to switch the input. It can be a bit tricky to get everything working the way you expect. I'd start by checking the Apple TV settings under remotes and devices and the Home Theatre section and turn off Receiver and TV control if its on. Then see if you can reconnect the Apple TV to the receiver and manually switch the inputs using the receiver remote.
Looks like it was my Samsung TV all along. I say that because its software got updated yesterday and the problem went away. However the update introduced new problems like making all the device names generic and not allowing me to connect to the devices. I still can switch between my PS4 and Apple TV using the buttons on their respective controllers, but now I can't control the volume (through HDMI) for my receiver using the TV or Apple TV remotes. Plus when I turn on my TV it no longer turns on the receiver. However, when I turn off my TV, it turns off the receiver. I guess I'll have to wait for the next software update for the TV.
I think really solved the problem this time. The problem reared it's ugly head again. This time I unplugged the Denon receiver and plugged it back in. Now everything works again. Pure effing excitement!!!
I agree that it's probably a CEC HDMI control issue. I left off the fact that everything was working just fine when I initially hooked everything up. The problem did not occur until two days later. I tried turning off Receiver and TV control and that still did not fix the problem. The Apple TV works when I hook it up directly to my TV, but that's not an ideal solution as the TV does not pass through Dolby digital.r
