Mail: how to edit SMTP list when that option is .. gone?

I want to edit SMTP settings in Mail (OS-X El Capitan) and went to

Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Outgoing mail server (SMTP), here:

User uploaded file

I expected the bottom item of the SMTP server list to be something like "edit SMTP server list". Instead, there are 3 blank lines there..

To fix this, I deleted all my internet accounts and trashed from Library:

  • Caches/com.apple.mail
  • Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
  • Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
  • Containers/com.apple.mail
  • Mail (yes, all of it..)
  • Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Guess what.. The same magic SMTP-list remained there!

Does someone know how to refresh that list?

I found the solution myself:

* go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts

* select one of your active mailaccounts

* go to Outgoing mail server (SMTP), and select None. Save settings

* Now start a new mail and try to send it using this "None"-account. Mail will ask which SMTP server to use. From there, you can edit the SMTP server list.

In my case, the blank items in the SMTP list described in the question were from old servers. The items did not have a description. After deleting these, and force stopping Mail after that, the list was fine and had a "edit SMTP server list" option again.
