Is it possible to upgrade the IE 5 browser in OS 9.1?

How we doin Gang?

Got a lot of help here recently 🙂

Ya know I'm sure other folks have asked about upgrading their IE 5 browser that comes with OS 9 - well I don't think Microsoft offers any more upgrades for MAC IE 5.0 (just like they're through with any support for Windows 98)

Is it possible to get another browser like "Safari"?

And if it's possible to get Safari or another browser will it work in OS 9.1? And another consideration is how much cabapility an old G3 has to handle a new browser?

With an 8 gig Hard Drive and 320 Gigs of RAM - who knows?

Any ideas?

Safari is for OS X, not available for OS 9.1. But you could try to download WamCom (Mozilla) HERE and see how it works.

Hi, Mike -

The latest, and last, version of IE for OS 9 is v. 5.1.7. Although it is no longer offered by MS for download, it can be downloaded from other sites. Here's a couple -
IE 5.1.7
IE 5.1.7

The first one has it available in many different language versions.

Another browser you could try is iCab. Though it's far from perfect, it's about the most current browser you're going to find for Mac OS 9 and earlier.

Mike,

I still use the software that Don has suggested on all my G3s with 3x memory allocation. Works fine and few to no crashes. Do not load Earthlink software or AOL software. Just dial up their numbers from 'Remote Access' for ISP access but do not use the ISP software. Use IE by itself.

An other Browser option is Netscape, the last one they released for PowerPC (7.02) is here:

It will work a lot better than IE, at least the text will be in roughly the right place.

Ok thanx to all - well I wonder how much better IE version 5.1 is than my current OS 9 version 5? Is it negligible?

Looks like at quick glance that Netscape seems to be the better bet, (perhaps more current capability), provided of course that the download doesn't eat too much of my 5.5 Gig remaining in this old 6 gig drive.

And if Netscape is a bigger download, then I guess the 5.1 IE update wouldn't hurt to try it like Don and Jim said?

Maybe it can clear up that stuff that doesn't downlaod properly my comcast's web mail site?

Netscape is a combination email reader and browser in one. It is a little dated, but seems to do Ok with fancy formatting in emails.

My old copy of v 7.0.2 [NOT 7.2, which is for Mac OS X only] took up about 58 MB on disk once it was installed.

Well Grant do you think Netscape (version 7), would be a more suitable upgrade than just installing the IE 5.1 update? Perhaps with Netscape I can see things more correctly than my current IE 5?

Perhaps I can find an install disc of Netscape on Ebay that would be compatible with OS 9.1

BTW

For those who may be also be looking for a more up to date Browser (as compared to IE 5), and as suggested here, yes Netscape 7 (for Mac OS 9), is pretty darn good.

At least I can see all the data in my Web Mail now ....
