Q: Quad G5 Kernal Panic Error Help

Quad G5 A1117 EMC 2023 with a gfx 7800 card .system SN# CK617038R70.

Purchased with unknown history, installed fresh hdd and all seemed to work fine until i decided to take it apart for a good

clean (which it really did need) bad idea, problems ensued.
Fan's kicked in all the time so i tried to run the asd disk to calibrate the fan speeds but it would just hang in

the graphics mode,Did read that you're meant to do it in open firmware mode but never found out how to

do it. When I did run a full hardware test on it everything passed, cpu's etc ,apart from it found a fault with the firewire

port.A that point it was at least booting to a useable o/s.
Now i've returned to it several months later and it's currently throwing up a kernal error with the scary big grey power button symbol and then fans kick in for blast off. I have just noticed that the case plate shows it came orig with ecc ram and i expect i've changed that to what i've had lying around so that is not ideal, will replace with original ram and see if it makes any difference.

Can anyone give me a steer as to what this kernal error is about? I'd love to fix this finally,

Here's first few lines of the panic kernal error here;

''unresloved kernal trap(cpu 0) ; 0x300 - data access DAR=0x0000000000000800 PC=0X000000003CA01F94
Latest crash info for cpu 0:
Exception state (sv=0x3c963500)
...there's lots more text than this put I'd be here all day!

Can someone give some clear steps as to how to narrow down this fault?

On reading this back it looks like one of the cpu's is at fault,i don't know.

I have all the tools necessary(i.e very long T-bar allen's)  to strip this again, perhaps that's worth a shot?

thanks all,

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5), G5 Quad 2.5

    Nice Name: PowerMac G5 PCI-express (Late 2005)

    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2

    Name: PowerMac G5 (Late 2005)

    ModelCode: g5_late_05

    Family name: A1177

    Model Number: M9592

    Group1: PowerMac

    Group2: G5

    Generation: 5

    CPU speed: 2.5GHz

    Colour: Aluminium

    Production week : -17- (April)

    Production year : -2006-

Production number: 110 (within this week)

    Model introduced: -2005-

    Memory - flavour: DDR2-L-533

Memory - number of slots: 8

    Memory - maximum total: 16GB

    Memory - largest module: 2GB

    Factory: CK (Cork, Ireland)

Two big problems on that model are the LCS drying out or slugging up & the Thermal paste lasting about 5 years, occasionally it's the old lead-free solder issue on the RAM slots.

Yep these ones are frought with problems.I have re-applied all thermal paste as it was dried out.At the time that i stripped and re-assembled i did check for leakage and everything looked fine ( i do remember consulting various web pages detailing the problem with older generation pumps leaking and i think mine is the updated one after apple realised there were major issues) but of course, how can i be sure there is actually liquid running through the system? I didn't think of that! Best way to verify that before we move further?

Yeah, the Quads had a good single pump, not really heard of one leaking, but the coolant still sludges up or evaporates.

Not easy to tell without opening a line or such.

Oh, did you install the CPUs in the same order they came out?

My pride would say of course but i may as well check if i am going to kill a few hours on it.

I did try to do everything logically and followed web guides on the subject so i think since its such a worthy beast i'm not beat yet and will strip it again.

    • Remind me what the cooling liquid consists of and if i can even get it from a retailer?
    • After re-assemble,how do i calibrate fans properly as i remember reading that when using ASD 2.3.6 that graphical freeze was common and apple advised you to start the calibration through 'open firmware' - at the time i could not find any sources on the net as to how to perform this.

    That's ASD 2.6.3.

As I recall it had 2 possible modes to start it, GUI or OF.

Anti-freeze & water, but they do sell it places for LCS PC overclockers...
