how do I remove Search Genius

You inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.

Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.

Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.

Were you able to find a solution? I went to the adware link and followed the instructions but it didn't help.

I followed all the instructions regarding removal of adware but was unable to remove searchgenius from my Mac...basically because I was never able to find it...and it keeps poping up every time I open a new window to google both in Firefox and in Safari...any other tips? thanks

It's simple and it works.

Simply go to your safari settings > extensions

You will find "Search Genius" in the left side panel, just click on it and you will find an "uninstall" button, click on it and choose to uninstall.
and Voila ... That threat is gone forever.

I figured out a solution. First, I downloaded Malwarebytes (https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/) a free program that will find and delete all adware or malware on your computer. Second, after that is done you need to go into each browser and reset your home page AND reset your search engine. Thanx Seif. I had the same problem and found your solution to be the easiest. However, I found it necessary to access Safari Extensions from the Preferences menu NOT the specific Safari Extensions menu option that sent me to the dastardly SearchGenius extension!!! :-)
