Q: Sync and upgrade issues

Hi,

I have an iMac 8,1 intel core 2 Duo:

1 processor: 2.8Ghz

no. of cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 Ghz

approx 300GB HD

It is fully updated Leopard 10.5.8 and Itunes is at 10.6.3 and says there are no more updates.  However, when I try to sync my 4S (IOS 7.1.1), it says it requires iTunes 11.1.  When I go to itunes.com to download it the itunes available is 12.3.1, which requires iMac IOS 10.8.5 or later.

My questions are

1.) Is there a way I can download Itunes 11.1 without the 12.3.1?

2.) to what IOS does my imac stats allow me to update to?

3.) How much do these cost/where can I get them, I assume upgrade to Snow leopard is cheaper now its been a long time?

4.) Do i need to backup the computer when updated - is there a risk it could lose data?

5.) The more IOS levels I update, will it slow the computer down?

6.) What is the best order to update imac / itunes /phone?

7.) I also have issues with Safari, where it crashes quite a lot, could this be due to the outdated systems?

Thanks!

Tim

    1) iTunes 11.1 requires OS X 10.6.8 so if you did download it you would still have a problem.

    2) If you have iOS 7.1.1, that is the oldest version of iOS you and install.  Apple does not allow the install older iOS versions.  (there are some workarounds immediately follow a new release of an iOS but this doesn't apply to your situation)

    3) What processor does your iMac have? Click on the Apple icon choose 'About This Mac'. If it doesn't say 'Intel' then you can't install a later version of OS X.  If it says Intel, click 'More info' then 'Hardware' in the sidebar.  Compare to System requirements for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6 - Apple Support

If your hardware supports it, you could request a DVD be mailed to you by contacting Apple support.  If your hardware is newer http://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/mac-software/will-my-mac-run-os-x-el-capitan-3 521736/, you can download El Capitan (but there may be software you own that is incompatible with that version)

    4) Always make a backup before updating OS X (or for that matter make Time Machine do it daily)

    5) Yes, newer operating systems are bigger and require more resources.  There are recommendations online for memory for instance.  There is minimum Apple published and then there is minimum for a good experience.

    6) Your order listed is the correct order

    7) Safari diagnosis should be a separate thread in this Community.  But a new OS X will have an updated version of Safari and my solve your problem.

    1. No
    2. El Capitan 10.11 - You have an Early 2008 iMac
    3. El Capitan is free. The iTunes upgrade is free.
    4. Always a good idea to backup your data.
    5. iOS is an iPhone/iPod OS. It won't affect your Mac. I have a mid-2007 iMac and it is running great with El Capitan.
    6. Update iMac first. iTunes update will be done at the same time. Then you can update the iPhone.
    7. Who knows. The updated Safari may help.

Thanks for your help UGA Dog!

1.)  ok, so i need to upgrade my iMac IOS first then.

2.) IOS 7.1.1 was my phone.  My imac is 10.5.8.  From what I have looked at it looked like my imac will meet the min requirements for El Capitan.

3.) It is an Intel Dual Core 2 Duo 2.8 Ghz.  Do you mean to get apple support to send a DVD of snow leopard, because that looks to be £15.00.  If El Capitan is viable with my imac stats, do i basically get the snow leopard DVD for £15 then download el capitan for free.  is snow leopard only on DVD?

    4.) ill back up first

5.) Is your 2007 mac with intel core duo 2 and 2GB memory like mine?  If so, I'll go for el capitan.

7.) I hope it will fix safari! :-)

did you have to go to snow leopard first?

Which OS system do people favour? I heard people didn't like Lion

My iMac mid-2007 is a 2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM. I would bump your RAM to 4 GB at least.

My iMac went through all the OS updates. The jump to El Capitan (10.11) was from Yosemite (10.10).

    El Capitan is working great.

Cool,  can I put any 2GB ram in this, or has to be apple I assume.   and how much would that cost these days?

Did you ever try the previous OSs on 2GB ram? if so were they working smoothly enough.

Ive never opened this mac up before! :-O

You cannot upgrade directly from 10.5.8 to El Capitan.  You will need to buy the Snow Leopard DVD.  I think it comes as 10.6.3.  That will need to be updated to 10.6.8.  Then you can update to 10.11.1 (El Capitan). The last two upgrades are free and online downloads.

You need 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM. Go to crucial.com to find the RAM you need.

I upgraded the RAM in the iMac shortly after I got it many years ago.
