How Do You Choose The Final File Size of Video?

I think I maybe bit off more than I can chew with this software. I want to be able to do one simple thing- compress my hi-def video files that are usually somewhere between 30-45 mins in length and around 2.5 gigs straight out of there camera to being under a gig. That's it. Nothing fancy. But it seems harder to do in this program than others that I have used. Does anyone have advice here? I'm just trying to upload it to Vimeo in some normal amount of time, not four hours.

If it is taking 4 hours to upload a half hour to 45 minute video, I would suggest that you check your Internet upload speed.

As for the encoding part of this, a lot depends on how recent your Mac is. Encoding on Macs that were manufactured less than 3 years ago are very fast at transcoding to H.264, which is the referred codec for the Web. Older Macs will take noticeably longer.

Once thing you can do to reduce encoding times, is to choose from the QuickTime Settings dialog Faster Encode.

To reduce the file size, and speed up the upload time, you could reduce the Frame Size (in the Inspector). And you could experiment with lowering the but rate to see whether the quality remains acceptable. (For example, a 720p video might still be OK @ 5 Mb per second, compared to the default 8 Mbps.)
