Free Garage Band not found in app store. I bought a new iPad Air, activated on 02 Aug. 2015. with iOS 8.4.

Have you tried opening the App Store, tapping Featured and scrolling down to Quick Links, tapping Apps made by Apple and finding GarageBand there? It is available for free on my devices this way.

Problem solved. updated to iOS 9.1. Got free GarageBand.
