Gmail set up issues on mail (OS 10.6.8)

I'm trying to set up a mail account for my gmail address used for work.

Mail will not connect to gmail. I tried POP and IMAP settings on the gmail side.

Have you tried a manual setup? After filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key while clicking Continue. Fill in the necessary information, then click continue until all screens are filled in.

That did help. In addition to that I did had to manually re-enter my user name and password correctly, choose IMAP, as well as activate SSL, same on the smtp server list. It doesn't say anywhere what the settings are, as later Mail versions seem to find that by themselves.

typical google/microsoft/whatever stuff to forget a few important details and then let you rot.
