Thanks taking the time to help Joe.  I pretty much knew to do those things but I followed the suggested steps and ended up with same result. My Apple TV3 connects to free services on the Internet such as  You Tube and Vevo, but does not Home Share with my computer. The problem surfaced with my first ATV launch following my iMac OS upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.11.1, so to me it looks like a software issue, but what issue is it?

Looks like I'll have to do that Joe. Bought my first Mac (2nd Gen iMac  blue gumdrop) in 1998. This is the first time I haven't been able to successfully  troubleshoot a software problem. Thanks again for your input.

Thought I should let you know the outcome. Before calling AppleCare, I went through the Home Sharing steps one more time. All the steps. Previously I had skipped rebooting Airport Extreme because I was able to access internet sites with Apple TV. This time I did the reboot and bada bing! problem solved.
